What one tjoef a day actually costs you (2026 South African prices)

Ten tjoefs a day at R60 a pack is about R1,100 a month, R13,000+ a year. Here's the honest maths, and what else that money quietly buys.

Let's do the maths most of us avoid. Not to shame anyone, just to see the number clearly, because the tjoef tax is sneaky. It doesn't arrive as one big bill. It arrives as R60 here, R40 there, and it never feels like a decision.

The basic maths

A pack of 20 in South Africa runs around R55–R65 in 2026, and disposables work out similar or worse per tjoef. So:

  • 5 tjoefs a day = a quarter pack = roughly R550/month, about R6,600 a year
  • 10 tjoefs a day = half a pack = roughly R1,100/month, about R13,000 a year
  • 20 tjoefs a day = a full pack = roughly R2,200/month, over R26,000 a year

And prices only go one way. Every year's budget speech adds a few rand to the pack. The calculator on our home page lets you slide in your own numbers. Most people who do it once never look at smoking the same way again.

What else that money buys

R13,000 a year is roughly a decent laptop. R26,000 is a proper overseas trip. R130,000 over five years is a car deposit. Nobody decides to spend a car deposit on tjoefs, but that's what the small daily decision adds up to.

The hidden costs the pack price doesn't show

  • Time. At 5 minutes a tjoef, 10 a day is over 300 hours a year. That's two full weeks of standing outside.
  • Health costs that don't show on a receipt: the cough, the fitness you don't have, the colds that linger.
  • The next pack. Nobody buys one pack. The habit is designed to renew itself.

The flip side

Every rand of that is recoverable, starting the day you quit. That's not motivational talk, it's arithmetic. Quit today and the same money starts buying something you actually chose.

Use the tjoef tax calculator to see your own number, then set your quit date and start counting the days you get it back.

Prices vary by brand and province. The point isn't the exact rand, it's the direction.
